Game of Thrones...(If you haven’t seen the last two episodes don’t read it)

 By: Stephanie Burke

I must admit that I only started watching Game of Thrones a couple of weeks ago. At the urging of some friends and a co-worker I decided to check it out.  I was hooked instantly.  I flew through the first two seasons in no time! I was up to speed and enjoying season three.  Then suddenly it was time for the season three finale!   If you haven’t been watching it, and don’t intend to, then let me bring you up to speed; if you have been watching it but haven’t seen last night’s episode then stop reading now.

Game of Thrones is exactly what it sounds like.  A “game” for the throne after the king (Robert Baratheon) has died.  The king dies and everyone in the “Realms” thinks they have a claim to the throne of The Seven Kingdoms.  The king does have a son but it is rumored that this son is the product of a relationship the Queen had with her brother….yep you read that right her brother! Therefore he is not the son of the king and has no rights to the throne.  However, the boy takes the throne anyway and the fighting ensues.  In the midst of the fighting there is lots of death and conspiracy! There are way too many characters to go into detail on them all but here are the main characters in contention for “The Iron Throne”.

Joffrey Baratheon-“Son” of the king (but rumored product of incest)
Daenerys Targaryen – “Mother of Dragons” and heir to a king in the history of The Seven Kingdoms
Stannis Baratheon- Brother of the king that died and due to rumors about Joffrey the next rightful heir

Robb Stark was a major contender until last week’s “Red Wedding” episode when he was killed along with his wife, mother, and army! However, what has yet to come into play is the lothario ways of the former king.  The Queen and Joffrey thought they had taken out all the illegitimate children of the king but they do not know they missed one.  He goes by the name of Gendry and I think he will, before long, be a contender for the throne.   Now please keep in mind there are many other characters and moving pieces that change all the time.

As I mentioned before Robb Stark was taken out in the “Red Wedding” last week, which if you missed it nothing I say will prepare you for it.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  It was, quite possibly, the goriest scene I have ever seen on TV.  That being said it was an amazing episode.  I was left thinking, “how are they going to top that for the season finale.” Answer is; they didn’t.  The finale episode last night was kind of boring at points and really served no purpose in my eyes. There was no great cliff hanger and no moment of shock and awe. I mean we are always left with the eternal question “who will finally overthrow the little tyrant Joffrey?” But all there was really no set up for next season…just the same old questions. In my opinion they would have just ended it last week and left everyone with their mouth agape wondering what next season will be!

I’ll give you a topic, Game of Thrones is neither a game or a throne…discuss!
